Martin coined this beautiful title, so I will let him start the conversation here.
Well thank you for that intro the amish for those that arent from america are a very close religious community that are from Germany. They still speak geeman but also english they do not drive cars, have electricity in their homes, no cell phones pretty much nothing modern like what we think of. They are very self independent in their communities the Liberland motto to live and let live describes their ethos very much they are what americans call pacifist as they do not enlist into military service they do not use outside medical services unless absolutely necessary and then the community has a dedicated fund just for that purpose. They have all of hallmarks of Liberland and daos like what we want to do but without any technology. We need to keep in mind that technology cannot always solve all of the worlds problems sometimes it is going back to what worked in the past and the amish are a great example of this.
Rumspringa is one of the most interesting parts of the Amish culture for me. For those who don’t know, when a young Amish person reaches adulthood they are given a period of time to go experience the outside culture and at the end they either return to their Amish community forever or they stay outside with almost no contact with their family.
I would love to see a study done on the % of returning rumspringa youths over the decades. I think Historically 90+% have returned to their Amish community, but it would be fascinating to see the numbers for the last five years and the effect of the modern extreme loneliness culture.
Also, while Amish culture is generally very appealing to me for many reasons, they have almost no culture for the pursuit of knowledge (afaik), in fact, it seems to be against their rules to pursue new knowledge in most instances. And with new knowledge would come new ways of doing things, so basically their culture is stuck in place and can’t move. I have heard some disappointing stories of some Amish having to keep certain things secret from the rest of the community, for instance anything even slightly viewed (incorrectly) as “the devil’s work” can bring harsh punishment or even be shunned by the community.
Yes I think it is a shame they have to hide improvements they have discovered it discourages community improvements that can be very beneficial…
