How to Visit Liberty Island (Without Losing Your Boat)

Before you grab your backpack and head for the border, here’s what you need to know about getting to Liberty Island safely and legally.

🌊 The Danube Matters

First things first: check the water level. Liberty Island sits in the Danube River, and for dry access (meaning you can walk in rather than swim or boat), the river has to be low enough.

Specifically, the water level at Mohács — a city upstream in Hungary — must be below 250 cm. You can check the current level here:
👉 leo.ll.land/river

If it’s under 250 cm, congrats — the land route is open.

🛶 Boats? Not Recommended. Here’s Why.

While the Danube may seem like a natural highway, we strongly advise against arriving by boat — even if you have one, even if you’re a good captain, and even if you’ve read all the maps.

Why? Because of aggressive actions by Croatian authorities in the area. Boats have been confiscated, travelers harassed, and unnecessary legal trouble stirred up. It's simply not worth the risk.

🏊 Swimming: Technically Possible, But...

If you're a strong swimmer and enjoy a challenge, yes — swimming to Liberty Island is physically possible. However, it's not ideal, especially if you’re carrying a flag, camera, or dry clothes.

That’s why your safest and most effective option is driving into the area of Osijek-Baranja (through Hungary, NOT Serbia) and coming to Liberland on foot.

Let us tell you how:

Thanks for the info. I’m interested in spending some time on the LiberLand (Land) and helping with construction works.

How about a camper van? Driving from Germany and parking safely the van somewhere “near” LiberLand overnight? The rest on foot or bike?? Is this doable? (I’m city boy and I need my “(music) toys & amenities” with me ) - Is there somewhere near LiberLand a safe overnight parking space?

By the way; I know of few travellers/campers which would probably do the same if their babies  ( e.g. caravans, trailers, travel vans and cars) would be safe and sleeping well at night.
