This post is about how Liberland can be self sufficient. Liberland needs to be able to be self sufficient no matter how much it grows with solar and hydro to be used for power, water from the danube, and starlink for the internet I think it can be done. Just make sure we have enough land for food.
When it comes to water and food I certainly think self sufficiency is possible. It will take some work tho, like maintaining greenhouses to extend the growth season, and taking care of fields for outdoor cultivation. Rabbits, sheep and hens can produce meat, milk and eggs.
The water in Danube might be drinkable after some pre-treatment and filtering through ceramic filters like Berkey et al.
The hard part is probably to capitalize on services and goods needed to conduct a “normal” life, to buy certain necessities, and to build the infrastructure. I guess Vit Jedlička already have some ideas here
I agree Vit JedliÄŤka probably has more than a few ideas on the infrastructure and the necessities! The others can be taken of care more so by the people individually or at least in small groups.
Self sufficient in what? wear? shoes? banana? car? airport? fertilizer? sea shrimp?
It is almost impossible to be self sufficient even if URSS, and cuba was almost.
But regarding water, even if no country along the danube drink water from the river (only a village in Romania) it is almost easy to have drinking water. At personal home, we can use a filter like Berkey, or distillate water. Osmosis reverse work also but it dont remoove evrything like Benzene gaz. Also rain pre filtered water from roof. At state level, or a company, we can use distilled water as some country do, like in Thailand, bottle of “singha water”. It is more expensive but still reasonable. we can have also another less filtered water for shower, WC etc… The major point is to be self sufficient in electricity. I think our solar farm in Croatia will be connected to Liberland. Also as personal home we can all have our off grid photovoltaic pannel and batteries. (zenaji from Aeon, made from titanate of lithium, per exemple have a life time of about 60 years(+20 000 cycles at 100% of discharge), or Nickel iron batteries with a lot of cycles(+ 10 000), and you can change the electrolyte inside after some decades. by the way for experiment, they took old Ni-Fe Edisson batteries from 1902, change electrolyte, and it was still working at 60% of capacity. a good brand is Encell. other technology like lithium is good too with up to 20 years working). Nickel–iron battery - Wikipedia Also we can have at small scale an intermitent hydro plan (because of the level of the danube, sometimes almost dry).
But the majority will come from a “tiny” nuclear power plan. At 10th anniversary we saw a small one in développement. link of liberland video about his presentation here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_26XlyEeYw
but still need enriched uranium from somewhere. And also miscelanous renewable energy. i dont think we have space for Concentrated solar power. wikipedia Concentrated solar power - Wikipedia
Just make sure we have enough land for food.
[/quote] food is of course the biggest difficult. we cant have ananas, lemon or banana (or in very small scale in heated green house; Island produce Banana), but the problem is also the space. and it will be almost impossible for shrimp, or Oyster). Anyway i have a couple of friend who are 95% self sufficient in food. in state scale it is more easy. even if i dont like it at liberland level, we can have vertical farm and hydroponic farm like in Netherland. i saw a lot of vegetable garden around so it will work also, even organicly. for meat, chicken, eggs, sheep, porc (and wild boars) and goat is ok, more difficult for cow as we dont have so much dry meadow. fish can be ok in small quantity from danube (as it is polluted). Trout can work in aquaponie. (along with freshwater shrimp or Tilapia) wikipedia:Aquaponics - Wikipedia
But the problem is more about fruits. ok strawberry and many other berries is not difficult, but it is more about cherry for exemple. in Liberland, i saw at least one plum tree (with still one fruit on it in september). Plum tree can grow and produce in wet soil. but cherry cant whatever the rootstock. (fruit trees are mostly grafted in rootstock, for exemple pear on quince maker). For that we will need a more dry soil and make berms and swales. it will avoid roots of trees to be all the time in wet soil. the other problem is the prices of the land, who would like to have a farm at this price, and what will be the price of the harvest? Another challenge is grain. yes the area is full of grain field, but still a matter of space and appropriate soil.
Heating: do we will use, nuclear power for it (like with heater pump), or wood stove for houses? (by the way cook stove with boiler is a good idea too). Anyway as it is very hot in summer, it is a good point to have electric air con too. (but can work on private solar pannels as i do).
ok, so now we have about water, food, electricity, and heating/cooling. but what about all other?
furniture, electronics, cars and fuel (electric?), pens, Christmas decorations, tobacco, windows and building materials, fabrics, medicines, hospitals, maternity wards, roads, bicycles, tires… be self sufficient is very hard and took decades or even centuries. The more important is water and electricity. After that we will need to import anyway.
Water and electricity is what I was most concerned about I have no problems importing but we need to be able to be self sufficient in those areas and at least be able to make some food. I love the mini nuclear plant that is how you do nuclear power. Im just always one that thinks about emp’s, wars, etc that could happen but thats just me.
